In 2021, the European Union’s pioneering Green Deal will increasingly come to life, through legislative proposals and other transformative initiatives. For the 9th edition of the Global Annual Energy Meeting, Esade’s Center for Global Economy and Geopolitics (EsadeGeo) is hosting, together with the Representation of the European Commission in Spain and EIT InnoEnergy, a series of webinars to explore the geopolitics of the Green Deal.
The second webinar in the series will address “Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms: Shapes and Effects”. As part of the Green Deal and the EU’s ambition to become climate-neutral by 2050, the Commission is expected to table a proposal for a carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) for selected sectors – a mechanism that would add a “carbon price” on certain imports to the EU.
The panel, featuring leading think tank and industry speakers, will address questions such as: What shapes could the CBAM take? Will it be effective in tackling carbon leakage? What concerns do various industrial sectors have? And what economic, environmental, legal and political implications might be expected – both within the EU and abroad, and in particular with the EU’s main trading partners?
