Few commissioners have their 2022 agendas as jam-packed as Vestager, whose challenge is to balance the need for Europe to foster the creation of new businesses and startups while keeping emerging digital and industrial monopolies in check. She sits down with Breakingviews to set the stage for antitrust and competition policy in the coming year.
Margrethe Vestager is the executive vice-president of the European Commission for a Europe Fit for the Digital Age and commissioner for Competition. Between 2011 and 2014, she served as minister for Economic Affairs and the Interior and was minister for education of Denmark from 1998 until 2001. In 2012 she served as president of the ECOFIN Council.
In 2007 she became political leader of the Danish Social Liberal Party and remained in this position until 2014. She worked for the Danish Ministry of Finance from 1993 to 1995. Vestager holds an MSc in Economics from the University of Copenhagen.
